can we stop beating our kids, please?

sourcedumal:

All of this. Even the way we TALK about corporal punishment is a happy remembrance of violence. “Get that ass beat,” “beat that ass,” “whoop that ass,” etc. Add on the notion of “Stop crying, or I’ll give you something to cry about” and “fix your face?”  All of which are said on a regular basis by black adults to children with the intent of violence?

And yes, I say violence because telling a child not to express an angry emotion under threat of their physical harm is VIOLENT. No adult would tell you to “Stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about” without getting their ass hauled off by police. And don’t even DARE tell me that you wouldn’t cuss somebody out after they made you mad and then told you to “fix your face.” So why in the hell would you expect any different from a child?

How in the hell is that environment going to make a healthy minded child? All you did was teach them that following rules = not getting violence thrown at you. Which we ALL know is NOT true in this white supremacist world where black people get violence thrown at them in ALL walks of life.

You also teach them that might makes right. This makes them MORE vulnerable to abuses of power, whether as recipients or instigators.
